Section – I (marks : 5*2 = 10 )
Note :
1)  Answer ANY FIVE questions, atleast TWO from each GROUP A and B.
2)  Each question carries 2 marks.
                              Group – A
1.What are the guiding principles of the Congress of Vienna ?
Answer:After the battle of waterloo,all the heads of the European countries met at Vienna in 1815.They prepared the following giudlines:
·      the principles of restoration and legitimacy.
·      Balance of power and compensation
·      Rewards and punishments

2.Write a short notes on Opium war ?
Answer:opium,an extremely harmful drug was smuggled into China by the East India company.
Ø In view of the health of the people,the Chinese Government prohibited the import of opium
Ø Some corrupt customs officials of china encouraged this trade
3.What was the immediate cause of world war I ?
Answer:Ferdinand  was the heir to the throne of Australia
Ø He was murdered along with his wife,Sophia,in Sarajevo,the capital of Bosnia
Ø A Bosnian serb murdered them
Ø Austria servered an ultimatum to Serbian Government to catch and punish the culprits within forty-eight hours

4.Write about marshall plan ?
Answer:To restrict the growth of communism in Europe,America initiated a programme of Economic
Ø It is named after Marshall,the secretary of states for America
Ø It was essentially an economic plan and to last for 4 years
Ø It was aimed to avert economic crisis which arose after the second world war

5.What is Federalism ?
Answer:Federalism means the sharing of subjects between the centre and the state Governments and working together
6.What is the difference between direct and indirect elections ?
Answer:
Ø When people directly elect their representative it is called direct election
Ø Eg:The election of the member of the Loksabha and Legislative assembly
Ø When people’s representatives from an electoral college and elect someone to a public position it is called indirect election
Ø Eg:The Election of the Members of rajya sabha

7.What is Communalism ?
Answer: A narrow aggressive and divisive outlook on the part of a section of people is Communalism
8.Mention  the objectives of SAARC ?
Answer: SAARC is the abbreviation form of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.It was launched in December ,1985.
·      To promote the welfare of the people of South Asia.
·      To achieve economic,social and cultural development
·      To make the South-Asian countries self reliant
·      To understand each other’s problems

11.What is Carbonary ?
Answer:The secret revoluntionary organization in Italy
12.How did Abraham Lincoln define “Democracy” ?
Answer: Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as “The government of the people by the people and for the people”.
13.Explain “The Third world “ ?
Answer:A large number of newly independent and developing nations of asia,Africa and Latin America who neither belong to the Western group(USA) nor the socialist group(USSR) are called third world
14.Write full form of UNICEF ?
Answer:united nations International Children’s Emergency Fund

15.What were the achievements and failures of the League of nations ?
Answer:When Sweden and Finland both claimed aland island in the Baltic sea,the league intervened and settled the dispute in favour of finland
Ø Germany and Poland had differences in 1921 regarding demarcation of their boundaries.The League settled the issue
Ø It settled the anglo-Turkish dispute over Itrag
Ø Humanitarian achievements:
Ø It fought against slavery and forced labour
Ø It promoted education in backward countries
Ø Failure of the League Nation:
Ø It could not bring out the disarmament
Ø It failed to get vacated the port of mammal which was occupied by Lithuvania in 1923
Ø The league failed in controlling the evil plans of hitler

16.Give an account of Nazism in Germany and the rise of Hitler ?
Answer:Hitler
Ø Hitler was born in Austria in a middle class family
Ø He joined the German army and participated in the First world
Ø After the war,he joined the workers and formed a new party called ‘National Socialist Party
Ø He became the member of the Reichstag,the lower House of the German parliament


Nazism:
Ø Hitler’s Nazism was a revolutionary force.It banned all strikes.It solved unemployment in germany.It made the German’s a war nation.The extreme nationalism of Nazism led Germany was defeated.

17.Write about the factors that contributed to cultural unity in India ?
Answer:All Indians regard the epics Ramayana and Mahabharatha as very sacred and read them with much devotion
Ø Sanskrit is regarded as very Ancient Native Indian language and has fostered the unity of the country
Ø Languages like Persian and Hindi helped in foresting unity among the Indians and served as court languages
Ø Certain rites and functions performed at various stages of life by every Indian are based on common tradition and culture
Ø People of all regions celebrate festivals such as Deepavali,Dasara,Ramzan,Christmas and they help in promoting cultural harmony

18.write about six schools of ancient Indian Philosophy ?
Answer: During the vedic period Yagna rituals were given importance.There were six philosophical thoughts.They were:
·      Nyaya
·      Sankhya
·      Vaiseshika
·      Yoga
·      Purva Mimansa
·      Uttara Mimansa
·      Vedanta

19.How is India committed to democracy ?
Answer:Indians have constituted themselves into a Sovereign Democratic Republic
Ø Supreme power in the country rests with the people
Ø There is no place for an autocratic form of government
Ø The elected representatives are responsible to the people and govern according to the law
Ø All its citizens are provided with Fundamental Rights and Fundamental Duties
Ø Any citizen is eligible to contest for any political office

20.Describe the Election procedure in India ?
Answer: In India general elections to Loksabha and states Legislative Assemblies are usually held once in five years
Ø The procedure for election is laid in the Representation of people’s act
Ø The election commission announces the dates and schedule
   of elections.
Ø One officer is appointed to each constituency to supervise and conduct elections.He/she is called the Returning officer
Ø Any one who is eligible to start in the election can file nomination papers duly proposed and seconded by the voters
Ø Anyone who is eligible to stand in the election can file nomination papers duly proposed and seconded by the voters
21.What are the functions of the United Nations Organisation ?
Answer:The united nations Organisation came into existence on October 24,1945:
Ø General Assembly: It is a kind of world parliament.It functions through various committees.It is only recommendatory body
Ø Security Council:There are 15 members in this body.It includes 5 permanent members and 10 temporary members.
Ø Economic and social  council:It works through functional commissions ,sub committees and standing committees.It responsible for achieving higher standard of living,full employment and conditions of economic and social progress.It strives hard for the promotion of universal respect
Ø Trusteeship Council:It elects its own president and vice president during the june session every year.The council meets twice a year.It has no sufficient work at present
Ø International Court of justice:It is situated at a Hague in Netherlands.There are 15 judges who are elected by the General Assembly and the security council independently.
Ø Secretariat:It is the administrative  organ of the U.N.O.Its headquarters is in New York.It is headed by the Secretary General.
22.What are the safety measures to be observed by a cyclist ?
Answer:He should not drive reckless in an uncontrollable speed.
Ø He should not stop suddenly without signaling
Ø He should drive slowly in the night
Ø He should take the turns stretching his arms to indicate his right or left turn
Ø He should not carry heavy load on his cycle while driving
Ø He has to slow down at zebra crossing,speed breakers,U turns,school zones etc.
Ø He should not try to compete with the power driven vehicles
